In One Heart, One Purpose, One Praise — Every Act of Service Is a Song of Worship

On this journey of faith, some walk the streets, some serve behind the scenes, and some uphold everything in prayer. Different roles—one shared heartbeat. Whether stepping into the Walkathon, offering a warm welcome at the front desk, or quietly supporting day-to-day operations, each act of service becomes a part of our praise.

This month, we highlight the voices of three volunteers. From different walks of life, they share how serving others has become a path of walking with God. Their stories remind us: when we offer our time, skills, or heart, God weaves it all into something far greater than we could imagine.

Finding Faith and Friendship Along the Way

Shirley, now heading into her final year of high school, first joined CCM in 2024 with a simple goal: to complete her high school volunteer hours. “At the time, I wasn’t a Christian,” she recalls. “But when I walked in, I could feel it—this place was different. It felt… safe.”

As a first-time volunteer, she sometimes struggled with doubt and insecurity. “I didn’t always feel like I fit in,” she admits. “But the staff and other volunteers welcomed me so warmly—they made me feel like I mattered.” Last year, Shirley began to explore faith and ask questions about God for the first time.

In 2025, she returned—not just as a volunteer, but as an intern. “This time, I’m not just helping out—I’m part of the planning team.” From organizing activities to supporting kids on the ground, she stepped fully into leadership. “The kids now come to me when they’re upset or need someone to talk to. It’s a new kind of responsibility—but a beautiful one.”

She laughs, “Personal space? Gone. But being trusted like that—it’s real, and it’s worth it.”

Looking back, Shirley says last year helped her discover faith through the Alpha Course at CCM and rebuild confidence after the isolation of the pandemic. “This year, I want to be that encouragement for someone else.” Her message to other youth? “If you’re unsure, just try. CCM will surprise you—it changed me in ways I never expected.”

Walking with Joy — Finding Grace in Every Smile

In spring 2020, as the pandemic swept across Ontario, Elaine found herself suddenly on leave from work. Yet what seemed like a disruption became a doorway. Introduced by a friend, she began volunteering at CCM, packaging cloth masks for the community. Stepping out of her comfort zone during uncertain times took courage—but that day, she says, God gave her strength she didn’t know she had.

Just a few months later, she stepped into the front desk role—a role she’s faithfully served in for five years. “It’s my stress relief,” she jokes. Whether sorting supplies or greeting guests, Elaine pours her heart into every task. One memory that stands out? A “Six Bricks” game session with seniors: “We laughed so freely—real joy, from the heart. I hadn’t felt that kind of laughter in a long time.”

Elaine is also a lifelong learner. She’s taken courses in emotional wellness, elder care, traditional medicine, and community resources—not just to grow, but to serve others better. “When someone asks for help, I want to respond with more than empathy—I want to offer real answers.”

“Looking back,” she reflects, “these five years weren’t just about me serving CCM. CCM walked with me through retirement and gave me purpose. I’ve learned to see people with new eyes, and to live with a more open heart.”

Finding Rhythm, Purpose—and Milk Tea—at CCM

Conrad graduated from college last summer. While job hunting, he was introduced to CCM and began volunteering in the office.

“At first, I had no idea how things worked,” he said. “But everyone was so patient. They answered my questions, explained things clearly, and made me feel like I could grow into the role.”

His responsibilities ranged from regular reception activities and updating databases to co-assist workshops for seniors on how to use smartphone apps. “Through that, I got to brush up on my Cantonese, improve how I communicate, and most importantly—learn how to listen and connect with older adults.”

What stood out the most? “The morning milk tea!” he grins. “Some days I’d be so sleepy, and that little treat—plus a snack—was exactly what I needed.”

Conrad says this volunteer experience gave him a glimpse of the real world: teamwork, and how to interact in an office setting. “It helped build my confidence and reminded me that I’m still learning—and that’s okay.”

His hope now? “I want to keep volunteering, take on more challenges, and be part of something that makes a difference.”
